One of the most pressing ‘hot issues’ in the field of Art History is how the discipline - as it has developed and as it has been delineated for the past one and a half century - relates itself to the ongoing globalization of the world. Significant is the CIHA [the largest International Congress of Art Historians held every four years] 2008 conference, where Professor Jaynie Anderson, the convener of the Conference has stated: “What many people throughout the world have recognized is that art and the discourses around it are increasingly global. Art and its history are not only created, but discussed in one form or another on all the inhabited continents of the earth. Globalism has thus also assumed an art historical aspect: indeed it has been described as art history's most pressing issue. But how can global issues in art history take form in theory or practice? What are the possibilities for a world art history?”
This theme as well as related issues such as the way in which visual culture influences our way of seeing, our being in the world, and our identity, interests both Haifeng and me. People move all the time, and an increasing number of people have multiple cultural backgrounds; this causes problems of communication and of mutual understanding: how to read each other’s images? How to know the cultural codes? What is cultural exchange?"

* In China it is customary to put the family name before the Christian name: Ni Haifeng; in the Netherlands the Christian name is followed by the family name.
I have opted for the European way of addressing Haifeng.
